Prime Video Now available in Australia with a free 7 day trial!

A different 'Amazon Prime' site that seems to list the same stuff if you want to check it out without signing up

I signed up, poked through the fairly limited database, could only find one thing I really liked the look of (American Gods), watched a bit, got bored, and cancelled the trial. So, not a ringing endorsement from me. But hey, it was free and filled some time.

(People outside Australia may not understand how exciting it is to have streaming tv here at all. Thanks for the tip [personal profile] lilysea)

Valerian and Laureline

I went to see "Valerian and the City of 1000 Planets". I wanted to love it. I tried to love it. After all, I loved "The 5th Element" and I love sci-fi and sure, I'd heard that the leads were wooden but I could forgive that for the spectacle, right?

It was an amazing, visual spectacle.

It was also an artefact of its time, where women are second to men and mostly irrelevant to the plot. Except for Laureline. (That's the woman.) I actually thought she was Valerian due to the marketing: the actress is the big name and her face stands out on the poster the most. In the film, she seemed the more interesting character.

But no. Valerian is the dude. Despite the original comic being titled "Valerian and Laureline". Despite them being co-leads with an equal amount of screentime.

It makes me so mad that the movie title is the MAN'S name when there are two leads.

Spoilers under the cut. )

I know that the comic it was adapted from was written in the 1960s/1970s. But surely a modern director should have had the sense to update the source material, just a little, to make sure it's not offensive?

Then again, how old is Luc Besson now? He seems to be stuck in the same mindset of 20 years ago when these things were overlooked. After all, everyone did them.

I did enjoy the movie. But the above things made me so mad. I could have loved it if it had just tried a little harder. A few small changes would have made a world of difference.

ETA: Good. I'm not the only one. I've been searching for this kind of article the last few days:

Remix Revival 2017 A fanart/fanfic remix exchange with signups closing on the 30th. I think this is the first panfandom remix exchange allowing both, I'm pretty excited!

Let's Make Games and Drink Responsibly: A gathering for people in the local games community, it was a lot of fun and I had some really interesting and inspiring conversations. Cam came along and it was perfect for him, as someone who is really interested in discussing and making games but isn't working on anything right now. Also Scott Ludlum was there! (I was too shy to talk to him but he said he was happy to be among friends, which was nice to see) It's apparently going to be monthly, best way to follow it right now is probably the Let's Make Games Facebook group.
