First day back at work.. bound to be fun. Lets see now..

First off, we have a bunch of messages on our voicemail saying people in one of our buildings can't access the network.. turns out a cleaner has somehow found a plug on the same circuit as our comms room.. and plugged a single phase electric polisher capable of drawing 15 amps into a plug with a 12 amp saftey switch.. which powered off aforementioned comms room circuit. Must do something about this.

Also, got an email from another department saying our mail/file/web server had been hacked. Oh goodie! Can't seem to work out just exactly what they did, so we're reinstalling it tomorrow. Or should I say, co-worker Simon is. Co-worker jenny used telnet to this machine.. and had her password found out.. and then had her desktop machine comprimised. So she has to reinstall that. We're thinking Windows might be a good idea for her.

I spent the day installing some new networking gear we got just before the break. Mmmm Cisco 2950XLs. Two of them for now, with another 4 on the way. Yay! :) I installed them to replace some hubs.. except the hubs were whacked in without duly noting which cables went where.. so I had to retrace all the cables.. and I'm still not done tracing. Should have it done by tomorrow evening I think. I spent about an hour on my hands and knees crawling around under tables in a few of our labs looking what was plugged in where and clearing up a horrible wiring job done by my predecessors. Ahh well. When the big lab goes on the two 2950s, it'll be schweet. Then we get the other ones in a few weeks and replace the last few hubs on our student network and go to fully 100M switched for them. Not that they'll care, but it'll be a joy to deal with, cause hopefully.. we won't have to again. Also have the new lab machines on order. Ya see.. once the student network becomes 100MB switched, we can make plans to start rolling it out to the rest of the department.. of course, it's already on my desk ;) hehe.

http://slashdot.org/ has a message about a review of the IBM Microdrive 1GB. The Microdrive is basically a tiny tiny 1GB drive (also 512 and 340MB version) which can be used in place of a compactflash (CF) card. CF cards are used in a lot of things, like my spiffy Canon G2 digital camera. CF cards are generally solid state - RAM chips, not mini hard drives. Some people on slashdot were saying that they would be vulnerable for shocks and therefore have a big chance of getting corrupted. However, someone pointed out..

Bill Biggart (the only Photojournalist to be killed wile covering the WTC crash/collapse) had one in his digital camera. It survived, he didn't

Harsh stuff. but I guess that's a sign of a good product. Actual images from said Microdrive are here.
