It's fun to come back to a place after a while away from it. I'm having fun almost gettings thing back up and running. They stole my old PC to use as a photocopier controller while I was away, so I had a new one arrive today. Well, they got an old case and put new guts in it. 1.2Ghz Duron, 512MB RAM, Intel PRO/100 ethernet card, Sound Blaster 10000, 16MB Riva TNT Video Card, running RedHat Linux 7. I installed Linux today and did some basic configuring on it.
Also arrived today were a Cisco switch and a Cisco Router, and 5 x Gigabit Ethernet modules for Cisco switches. RRP of about $24,000. I spent today playing with them. Installed all the Gigabit Ethernet modules and got one of the links up and running at High Speed. Nifty. For now I'm using the router and switch on my desk to try some stuff out with. Hehe. It will be a while before the other two Gigabit links are ready for use. Need to do a fair bit of reconfiguration for them to go in.
Also fixed up my account administration script, which someone had broken by changing the permissions on. Silly humans. Then, disabled printing, since students are doing exams right now, and if they could print, they would be printing out exam notes, which we don't allow (we're nasty :(). I did setup a way we can except students from the block tho, so that will be useful.
Then, I did a bit of a review of how the printing system had gone while I was away. Went pretty well :) So far this year (4 months!), our printers record spewing out 88795 pages. All but 2757 of them are accounted to people's accounts, and much of that can probably be explained by us using the printers, since we don't get accounted. So that works out to about 3 pages per print job.. and 30 jobs per person.. so about 100 pages per person this year. They're not even half way thru, and they call us mean about printing. I know *I* didn't print out anywhere near that many pages per year when I was a student.
Tonight not doing much. Tomorrow I near to bring in some Quebec souveniers I got for someone, and after work I'm going to visit Simon and Tim.
