Aug. 6th, 2002 06:51 amDidn't do all that much yesterday.. had a bit of a play with some robotic cameras, which was kinda fun. Went to the usual "Mothers" for lunch. They'ld cut out a huge section of the front of this store and put in a window! Hehe.. wow! This place .. I swaer the guy who runs it must be like slightly not-right in the head, every week something changes. Like, not just the occasional change around of furniture, but like, full on renovations sometimes, rearrangements of cabinets of food etc. It's a bit weird :)
Also, finally got around to patching the TiBook into our one spare Gigabit ethernet port :D Mmm gigabit. So speedy :D The big bottleneck now is the HDD on whatever machine is connected to that, since most HDDs max out at about 333Mbps, while Gigabit can do 1000Mbps :) Spiffy 7200RPM firewire drives can do 500Mbps, but the internal HDD in this powerbook is only 4200RPM, which means it can transfer less quickly. Tho that being said, it took only 3 minutes to copy a 700MB file between my TiBook and a Sun E220R with gigabit ethernet ;) And using the preload option to ping (it loads pings inot memory, then pumps it down the wire as fast as it could, I was able to make them throw 30,000 packets at each other in the space of 15 seconds.
I was in talking to our accounts clerk and she got this look of extreme mortification at the door as her old boss walked up. Heh. He was looking for someone's lab, which was close by, but secured, so I figured.. well he's wearing a suit, and Doris knows him.. he's probably ok. So I walked with him and let him in. Went back to talking to Doris.. apparently it was this guy, the Vice Chancellor. Heheh. Yes, I knew who it was allllllll along :)
Simon and Olly came over for dinner. Rob and Tim are still in Canada. Maple syrup drinking hosers ;) We had lemon mint basil pork and rice. Mmmm very nice. Silly simon ate one of the chillis in it.. hehe. He had about 7 minutes of fun, which I'm sure seemed much much longer to him. Simon and I geeked a bit. He bought his iBook over.. and well, I have a few computers. And simon has ADSL :) Poor simon tho.. his iBook's internal hard drive was totally full by the time he left :)
Food time!
