Mmm mondays. Did bits of some jobs for someone who's put in 4 jobs to do about 8 things in the next week. Bleh. None of them are particularlly bad, it's just annoying to have so many similar ones. It gets confusing. Actually, one thing which morally offends me is that it's to install so much commercial software for which there are open source alternatives, like setting up IIS servers on Windows 2003 Servers so a student can run his ASP stuff. Why can't they use PHP and Apache *whine* at least he's using mySQL instead of Microsoft SQL, but still.. I hate ASP. I hated it waaay back, two and a half years ago, in 2001, and I hate it now.

Anyway, enough about that. I played with LVM (Logical/Linux Volume Manager). Seems funky. Got an enclosure with 3 x 9GB SCSI UW disks, and setup an LVM set in about 30 minutes. Played with add/removing/resizing. Seems very cool. But how trustworthy is it? Do I want to use it on a server? Hmm. Going over a support contract with Tom from our RAID vendor.. one of our RAIDs is a SCSI enclosure which takes IDE disks.. it currently has 3 x 80GB drives in there.. so basically 150GB. They want $975/year for supporting it. Uhh lesseee... 4 channel SATA PCI card + 3 x 160GB SATA disk is a lot less than that.. so .. lets not :) So we're doing a new server at the end of the year.. with those in it (or larger drives..) I may use LVM for it so I can mess with partitions a lot easier.

So yes.. Windows bad, Linux good. Next post likely tomorrow. Ta!
