Man.. freakin iBooks..

I bought a deadish iBook G4 off an Arts postgrad for parts.. it was showing the screen mostly in static. I figured it would be worth taking it to get the usual fault repaired at my favourite SMT rework company, AT&M. No more static, but now it has a different problem, where at bootup, the fans go on full blast, and it fails POST. Blah.

The rework fixes the static, but I don't know how to fix the full-blast fans/otherwise dead symptoms. And the rework cost $110.. which was somewhat more than I was expecting.. but I did have them remove the chip, clean, reflux and remount, so not unreasonable I suppose. I'll just get them to heat it up again next time I need one done :P

Animal House residents may remember my pet project of rebuilding a Colour Classic with PowerPC insides. The one I started back in 2003. Well, with my nifty Futurlec 3.3V VREG boards, I now I have the last bit I required to get the thing going.

And it works, woo!

Ok, there's no Red video, but I'm sure that's fixable easily enough. Nor a power cable for the hard drive, again, not a problem. Nor a network interface (mmm OS9 compatible RTL8139 maybe).

But, it boots up into the finder and shows OS9 on it's tiny little 9 inch CRT. Yay finally.

Also today, gave Ducktronics to Unisfa. Will wander over next week to steal their dead one and some money from someone.

Still a bit annoyed that the iBook G4 is still dead, but oh well.
