We decided not to go plasma for our next TV as the life on them still isn't worth the cost. However, there are now lots of cheap CRT widescreen TVs on the market. The cheapest is a TEAC 66cm (iirc) for about $800.... We're seriously considering saving up to buy one as watching digital tv on a regular tv can be difficult especially when watching sport -- it's hard to see the scores because the writing is so much smaller.
