Hmm shiney digital cameras.. I've been pondering getting a DSLR, especially after seeing the photos from
firefly21's wedding taken with the Canon 300D.. this is basically what I'm looking at so far.
The D50 is basically the D70 with SD instead of compact flash (so no microdrive).. all of the Nikons are 6MP, and the Canon is 8MP (but at that size it doesn't really matter).
Jury Duty continues till tomorrow, then I should be back to work. w00t ;p

There's plenty of articles stating the differences between the D50 and D70S. Apart from the SD/CF thing, the D50 has only one command dial where the D70(S) has two. No big deal? Well when you want to quickly change the shutter & aperture you'll appreciate two command dials. There's a few more differences, but I'm sure you'll come across that in your research.
My D70S body was <$1200 and I got a great Sigma 18-125mm lens (for travel convenience) for $300. All eBay'ed, and that was the week of the D70S launch. Go the eBay! (covered my Nikon global warranty, and Maxwell are nice enough to fix cameras Nikons out of warranty, too.)
70-300 is overkill unless you're going to be taking an assload of photos at a distance.. my Sigma 70-200 F2.8 has great reach for things like photographing sports such as cricket/football (and don't forget, 200mm on a Nikon DSLR = 300mm equiv for a film camera, and that's hoooooge.)
Again, the SB600 sells for retail for almost double what you can get one new on eBay.
Check out Ken Rockwell's site for a pro's comments on the D50/D70S/300D/350D.
Sorry for blathering so much, I'm kinda into the subject :)
