I has a Canon 450D :D

w00t!

We bought the body only + Tamron 18-200mm lens (no-where in Perth had a 18-250mm tamron). It's older, but still well rated, all things being considered. It'll be a good enough travel lens, and I'll pick up some nicer ones in Singapore on the way home.

From my wanderings, lenses aren't cheaper in Singapore. Dubai on the other hand...

Sometimes good: http://photobuff.com.au/

Awesome!!!!

Ohhh so much fun to play with!!!!

As for the tamron - test it to be sure it's properly compatible. I had a Tamron which was in paper compatible but frequently caused errors in my baby..

Otherwise it was a brilliant lens, perfect for travel.

Lenses in Singapore were about 2/3rd the price of local when I was there last year. Can't speak to Dubai however.

It seemed to me that things manufactured in China (e.g. flashguns) were cheaper, but that things manufacturered in Japan were not. I suspect some of this has to do with the buying power of various currencies.
