Sick..

Tuesday night last week, I started feeling really tired, the way you get when you're about to get sick. Driving back from the Boeing tour on wednesday, I started feeling very much under the weather, and worked from home on thursday. Come friday, when we were heading up to Whistler, I kept getting worse and worse..

So I basically spent the entire time in Whistler in our Hotel room with a low grade fever. Which was nice enough, but I'm sure I'm missing part of the experience. Anyway, last night and the night before I got very little sleep because of how much it hurt to swallow (we're talking 8 out of 10 type pain), so I actually went to the doctor in Whistler, and it turns out to be "strep throat", which seems to be the term instead of tonsillitis here. Yuck. Have some of Doctors Fleming and Florey's Magnificent Invention (aka penicillin), and it seems to be helping (and if it doesn't, I have some codeine too.. hah). But I can't go back to work until Wednesday. Doh.

Such is life.

A preface.. a week or two ago, Boeing rolled out the first 787-8f. I wasn't a fan of the livery, and said so on twitter. The twitter rep for Boeing's Future of Flight noticed this, and invited me down to have a look at it in person, and take the tour of the factory, for free *Squee* :D

So we rented a car, and [livejournal.com profile] lizbyrd and her parents and I headed off down there.

Well, back up a second. I rented a Red, 3.5L V6 Dodge Charger. It was a freakin' awesome car, with only 2400kms on the clock (we did another 380kms). Shame it was raining most of the day. Second hand prices aren't too bad either. Hmm! :D

I went on the tour in 1999 with my mum, but I didn't have the plane-nerd background I do now, so I knew this was going to be different. Also, we almost got crashed into in a high speed car chase back in 1999, which fortunately didn't happen this time. The whole concept of being able to drive to another country for a day trip is cool. Back in 1999, they had a small shop in the middle of a parking lot. They now have a huge exhibition center + store. The exhibition center has all sorts of cool stuff to walk up to and touch and feel, such as a 747 tail, GE90 engine, a 787 carbon fibre re-enforced plastic section 41-43 or so and a 727 cockpit.

The tour starts in the 747 assembly hall, where they were making line number 2 - 6 of the 747-8f. I was reminded once again just how amazingly complex building a plane is. And that building is something else.. it's huge, and contains a mix of offices and assembly areas and cafeterias. I'd kind of like to work there, much in the same way that as a concept, working in an Apple store would be cool. You then hop back in the bus and go onto the 777/787 production area. Also interesting to see.

All up on the tour, I saw:

  • N787EX - First 787 (as well as the next 12 or so in production)

  • N7808A - First 747 Dreamlifter

  • N747EX - First 747-8f (as well as the next 6 in various stages of production)

  • A6-ECX - New 777-300 delivery flight for Emirates

  • .. and some other stuff

So I've now seen the first 737, 747, 757 and 787. The first 727 is also at the Paine Field Airport, but I didn't see it. Eventually I'll see it and the first 707..

All up, good fun.

Following the armistice of 1918, the German Navy was moved to Scapa Flow, and moored there with their German crews while the greedy allies decided who would get what ships.

Ze Germans however, wanted nothing of this, so despite the armistice, scuttled the ships, an act of war in and of its own. Some of the ships were saved and scuttled as target practice in the 1920s, but most went to the bottom. Some were refloated, but again, most are still there. There's a wikipedia article, but don't read it right now..

Fast forward to the 1940s. The somewhat unfair settlement against the germans has lead (in part) to another world war, and the americans develop a massive weapon, the likes of which have never been seen before. The war in Europe finishes, and this new weapon brings about the end to the war in Asia. More of these mighty weapons are tested, and from the fallout, the world's background radiation increases just a bit. So much so that most of the world's steel refineries produce steel that contains trace levels of radiation (in some cases, not so trace..)

Anyway, this produces a problem. How do you compare radiation levels when everything is now radioactive, to a degree? Well, the easy way is to compare it to something you know is mostly non radioactive. So they grab steel that's been under water since the 1920s, and thus shielded from most radiation. Remember the Kaiser's ships? Yup, them.

The circle of life continues.

A few weeks ago, I bought a Acer Aspire X1301 + LCD, since it was a great deal.. C$399 + tax + enviro fees.

I then sold the LCD for $50, leaving me with a C$349 computer.

The plucky little Acer had some problems.. its power for gaming was.. limited, to say the least, and it only took half height cards, which meant it would be difficult to actually get a good card in there. Then I opened it to check something and the power switch stopped working..

So being me, I bought a new case, PSU and a Radeon 4890 1GB graphics card, and .. erm.. upgraded it. I swapped in the motherboard + drives from the Acer, which meant Windows 7 didn't need to reactivate, and then plugged in this grunty ATI giant of a card. And it works, I get 100+ fps in everything I've tried so far ;)

The only problem is that the graphic card doesn't have HDMI (despite the box saying in big letters that it does have HDMI, and then having a small weasel statement about requiring an adapter), which means right now.. no sound or use VGA. But I have the adapter on its way, courtesy of eBay.

Rented a car today to do some shopping at IKEA. Got a sub-compact 3 door car of some sort. I felt pretty dangerous driving it.. such a small turning circle, and so quick.

Amazingly(?) it had enough room in the back for a table+4 chairs from IKEA, as well as a bunch of other stuff. Very handy.

Eliz's friend Nome came over and we did lots of furniture assembly. Our house now feels more complete. Went out to dinner with Nome and his gf. She's nuts, and funny. Very enjoyable night.

Did a bit of shopping before returning the car. Eliz vetoed the plastic bamboo, even though it would be awesome.

Returned car and caught the Canada line home. 40kms driving = $1.90 in fuel.

Firstly, via [livejournal.com profile] jwz, fascinating graphs and data about okCupid (data site) - http://blog.okcupid.com/ - from a maths and sociology point of view, it's pretty amazing.

---

Secondly, we made it back safely from Portland. Including [livejournal.com profile] lizbyrd driving through downtown Seattle at 5:30PM. She did awesome. Had a great time down there, it was great of [livejournal.com profile] lazulisong and [livejournal.com profile] vampireborg to let us stay at Chez!Twins, and it was good to meet their friend [livejournal.com profile] tygati, and it was awesome to finally meet [livejournal.com profile] kashi and see [livejournal.com profile] velithya again :)

Returning the car was a bit of a pain.. the gas station I usually go to was closed, and I couldn't find the one at the airport, so I was delayed a bit getting it back, but that was ok. Also, something fell off a truck and hit our car while we were driving down to Seattle on friday night. It didn't do much damage (slight scratches), so I hope the rental car place doesn't want our spleen for it, but of course the guy at the desk couldn't comment.

So the trip so far..

Picked up car from airport straight after work. Drove home, finished packing, had some noms, and then drove into the night. Quick wait at the border (and they were really nice!) then driving into the night to Seattle. Stopped on the way for a driver change + caffeine, got in at about 10:45. What a maze the streets of downtown Seattle are. Wow.

Met up with one of Elizabeth's friends for breakfast at Pike Place Markets. Very nifty place. Then onto the Museum of Flight. Such emotions. We crashed a party/wake Delta was holding for one of their last 747-200s (N624US) before it flew off into the Sunset of demolition. Had a walk inside it too (without going through security!). They didn't like me taking photos from inside the fence, but were fine from outside. Sigh. Also saw the 757 Prototype (aka the Catfish).

Had a look inside the museum, and then into the Airpark. The Airpark is kinda sad too. It has a Concorde, the first Air Force One 707, as well as the first 747, 727 and 737. They aren't in very good condition. The 747 is actually in pretty bad condition :/ Oh well.

Then drove down to Portland, and here we are now. Have many photos, but that's for later :D

Sigh.

Working at a University, as I for some reason continue to do so, you are exposed to a large amount of political material from various student (and staff) groups. I also know some people who are pretty interested in Canadian politics.

I remember that at one point, I'd see this political speech and think "wow, the ruling party suck, how could they do these things!". But as I've started thinking more critically, I've started to notice how sometimes these hot topics are mutually exclusive.

One example:
- BC Liberals have cut millions from student support loans etc!
- BC Liberals are predicting a deficit of over $400 million next year!
- BC Liberals introducing HST - tax increase!
- BC Liberals won't raise minimum wage!

.. so which would you like guys? you can't spend money you don't have without going into deficit. You can't have the money to spend without cutting programs or raising taxes. You can't provide services without taxing, etc.

Another example, Federal Liberal blogger friend made a tweet about how the Conservative Party were spending into deficit. But the thing is, stimulating economies during depressions/recessions is best done by government spending.. so spending money in and of itself isn't bad. At the same time, the Conservative Party (the ones in government) are running attack ads against the head of the federal Liberal party, talking about how terrible it is that he used to live in the US..

Which brings me to the conclusion that as a politician, EVERYTHING you do is going to piss SOMEONE off, and pissed off people ranting sells newspapers and gets viewers on TV. Which is another factor.. newspapers in particular are in a lot of financial trouble these days, and so are fanning the flames of discontent.

I think the trick in being a politician is to make sure you don't do things that will piss off too many people at once.

Our bedroom = C$1331.63
Originally uploaded by theducks
What with renting an unfurnished apartment, we've had to buy stuff to actually make it liveable. I think we're at about C$2900 in furniture (almost 100% ikea) and C$3000 in Appliances (ok, maybe I didn't need the 42 inch 120hz full HD LCD TV and HD PVR, but whatever :) That sum also includes a toaster, phone and LCD for Elizabeth). We still don't have a dining table, and have thoughts of a futon for the spare room (but for now, an inflatable air bed will have to do for any visitors). If we do bugger off back to Perth in 10 months, with any luck we can make half of it back at least.

All of the furniture is put together now, but the rest of the house is still a bit of a mess - we have a lot of cardboard packaging to get rid of, and since 1st September was moving day for a LOT of people, the cardboard recycling bin downstairs is full. Actually, it's two huge dumpsters, but they're full. Will attempt to do similar photos of other rooms of the house when it's in a fit state for that.

So our bedroom.. Ikea Malm bed, Malm bedside tables and Malm chests of drawers = C$427 before tax. Mattress was another C$699. Pillows were another C$27. Sheets from Perth. Grono lamps + bulbs were C$17.98 each, making a total of C$1331.63 (AU$1444.85) . There's an Ikea comforted/doona in the cover, but I can't remember how much it was. Probably not much.

I'm bad at keeping track of stuff like this, but does anyone live in Portland Oregon?

Elizabeth and I are heading down for the weekend of October 3-4 (probably coming down friday night and back sunday) to see [livejournal.com profile] velithya and others.
