On this day, 4 years ago (1998), I met [livejournal.com profile] blu, [livejournal.com profile] singularity and [livejournal.com profile] fee for the first time.

Every day we come to forks in the road. We make choices. We go one way or we go the other. Usually they don't matter much in the long run. Sept 9th 1998 was not one of those forks. It's the one of the other ones. The ones you don't notice at the time, but you can trace back to it down the track and see how it had lead you on life's path.

On the afternoon of September 9th 1998 at about 4PM, I had finished O-week activities for the afternoon and was looking over the program for the rest of the day. I noticed a comedy show by "The X File's Dean Hagland" on at Alumni Hall at 6:30PM. Looked like a bit of a lark I thought. The X Files fan in me (for the force was still strong back then) says I should go see it.

But it conflicts with dinner! I'll only be able to get to it at opening time.
You can get something else to eat now and go early.
Good point!

And so, it was with that decision that I foregoed dinner in trade for some lighter eating, and arriving 2 hours early. And so I met Jen and Jay, then later Fiona, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Without those three, especially Jen, I would never have started hanging in #xfr on it's many networks (iobbs, warped, etc). Without #xfr, I would have been unlikely to like LJ as much as I do. Without LJ.. well I'd probably go insane ;).. and wouldn't have met [livejournal.com profile] strangegrrl or [livejournal.com profile] lizvang, and my visits to Toronto would have been very boring. Or would there have even been visits to Toronto? Without close friends like Jen, I wouldn't have stayed an extra semester in Canada. Without that, I wouldn't have graduated 12 months late. Without that, I wouldn't have got the job I have today. Without that, I would not have gone back to Canada this year. But I did meet them, and LJ, and stayed the extra semester, graduated late, got the job I did, came back, and had fun. You three rock. Especially Jen, who's always managed to put up with me over the years and been lots of fun to hang out with and chat to. Why do I have to be 14000kms away?

Kids, think about your actions in life. You never know where they will lead you :) I am who and what I am today because on September 9th 1998, I didn't really care for dinner.

wow, thanks for sharing that story :) i never knew that you four hadn't met before #xf-r. i always assumed y'all met up BECAUSE of #xf-r. so did they (those 3) know each other before you met them? or did none of you know each other? i would love to hear more specifics about your meeting :)

I'll answer this for ya, and they can add to it if they like.

Yep, we knew each other before we met Alex, and we knew each other even before #xf-r. We all met through the XF though. It was through a XF club at that university that we met (Only one of it's kind at a university or college in Canada at the time and was used to help promote the university life at UWO heh). On the day that Dean was doing a stand up routine, we were meeting to go to it (technically it was for frosh, but we went in anyway. I wasn't first year, while Fee and Jen were not even attending the school heh). The three of us met some others through the club, which then lead to #xfrp and then #xf-r for me. They got into #xf-r in other ways.

As for in person, I think I've only met three others through #xf-r. All three were very different types of meetings in real life, but I'm only in contact with one of them still (Paula aka Scully). One dissapeared (Kim, aka Rose I think it was) and the other (Jaime) is a long complicated story that doesn't end well.

I hope I haven't forgotten anyone or missed anything, I do have a terrible memory afterall ;

Heh, that's good to hear. I'd hate to think all meetings with people wind up going bad in the end or they dissapearing without a trace.

Didn't we all? ;)

Med-Syd had some particularlly embarassing ones, now I look back on it.. but with 800 people singing them, it's not too bad :)

Don't worry, I know I still liked first year Jen :)

And believe me, we're glad you didn't care so much about dinner that day ;) It's been great knowing you all this time, you helped make life more fun for all of us as well. Gotta love how seemingly innocent decisions can affect your life in so many profound ways. It helps to make life more interesting since it's not predictable heh.

Oddly, when several of my friends and I first met during my life time, I met them all in odd or interesting ways heh. For instance, I think I told you about the Columbian Sewer Rat and how that joke made me good friends with another person?
