Well, coworker was away today again, so just me again.. but I got plenty of stuff done today. I feel all productive!
Our electronic workshop had its cabling finished early this morning, so I plugged them all into their switch, while they replaced their crappy ISA coax/utp cards with 100BaseT PCI Intel cards (Mmmm Intel PRO/100S+ cards *drool* .. erm yes, anyway, they're nice cards). And, amazingly, it all worked too! So they were happy campers. Also network wise, installed a switch for a research group, so they're happy too. Simple things ;)
Also, wrote a perl script to email me when our printers run out of toner. *feels speshul*. I dunno, I just love controlling pieces of hardware with computer programs. Makes me feel like I'm playing with robots, and doing it with Perl is even cooler ;)
Did some general cleanups in the office. Beat NTS1 around a bit and seems that it's working, but it will probably crash when it tries to backup tonight. Solution? Turn off backups I think ;) Bah. Stupid server :P I'm still working on its replacment NTS1.. it's getting there. Need to install Microsoft SQL Server and a buncha crap like that, including Rational Rose java UML tool.
Setup about three vacation message auto responders for people. What is it with people wanting other people to know they're away whenever they send them a message? Heheh. Not that it's a big deal to do, I just forget how each time. Hehe. I wrote a program to do it at one point too.. wonder what I did with that. Meh :)
Stuck some more tapes into our backup system for the backup that was supposed to go on wednesday night, and the one which will go on saturday night, and the one which will go sunday night.. fixed up a corrupt backup index file for our main server. Still need to free up some disk space from the backups, but I'll do that another time.
Gave a student a quick 15 minute lesson on network design and the workings of TCP/IP. He probably missed half of it tho, his english isn't too good. Oh well.
Also, went oot and aboot with Anja tonight, and since I knew I would be going straight from work, I didn't take my powerbook in. Oh how I missed you sweet TitanFlakes :( I had to use icky pine from an ssh session from a mac running OSX 10.1.5 to read my email! Bleh.
So Anja and I meet at a pub.. but it's seats are full, so we can't get anything to eat there.. so we go somewhere else, and there's a bunch of people I know from high school there having dinner. Had a bit of a chat with them, but I really don't care about any of them all that much, so it was just a quick hello, then back to my table. Hehe. Anja had seen Sum of All Fears last night, so we went to the Subi cinemas to see what else was on.. nothing that either of us hadn't seen... so we go to Innaloo Cinemas (about 10kms away), and saw xXx instead. It was funny. Very action movie :) Lots of blowin' sheet up with cool gadgets. Heh. Saw someone else from EE at Innaloo too.
I've known Anja, aka Ajay, aka narfley for about 6 years now, from an IRC channel on undernet I used to hang out in called #x-files. I first met her in the flesh in 1996, when myself, Skinner and Redhawk went to see Twister, at Innaloo.. same place we went tonight. Geeky pictures of #X-files people are here. Also shows well how JPEGs deteriorate the more you save them ;) We were both born in 1979, so are the same age. She works for an engineering company named Schlumberger (pronounced slumberjay). She's a chemical engineer, and makes scads of money, but has to work 6 day weeks in return. She got the job a few years back, and moved to South Australia (expenses paid by the company, and a house provided, since they wanted her to move there). Then, they want her to move to Perth.. so again, expenses paid.. plus, because they moved her here, she gets another house to live in.. even tho she is originally from Perth! Lucky girl :P It's resonably nice.. pretty sparse, but modern and clean and stuff.. Oh AND FREE. Also, she gets flown to training courses all around the world too.. so like.. flown to England for four days type thing. It's a nice job for some ;)
Anyway, work was good. dinner was good, movie was good, alex is tired. Night! :)
