Remember me? I'm back, in Pog form!
Feb. 20th, 2003 09:22 pmOr something...
Work is hella busy. It is times like this when I don't feel bad about web browsing at work during the rest of the year (no really, it's usually computing related sites, and I need to know about the newest and greatest stuff :)
This weekend, more Currie Hall networking probably... then high school friend Roger's birthday party on saturday night.. I feel a bit bad. I see more of Roger's wife than I do of him. But she works across the road from Mothers, and we're often both there for lunch.
Speaking of Mothers, I have been bad and evil and causing much troubles upon the UCC mailing list this week because they were talking about not getting the Mothers discount this year! I think they're going to tho. This will be good. It will make me feel good about giving them surplus computer stuff this year and stuff :)
Speaking of food, today we had a lunch for the outgoing head of department, paid for by the department. mmm free food :) 20 of us managed to rack up a $800 bill. $40/head for food + drinks is pretty good I guess. And in case you haven't heard my rants.. no tips to the staff. why? because this is Australia.. you give the staff a tip and they'll look at you funny. Honest. Back with the Undernet goons in Washington in 99, we once had a dinner.. paid for together.. food + tip was about AU$1800 :) That's a scary ass bill.
Speaking of money.. I have a few geeky/etc things i'm looking at, but don't know which to buy.. They're all about the same price..
[Poll #104449]
My palm iiix crashed today.. or at some point in the past. Noticed it today anyway.. it's coming up to 4 years old.. could do with a new one I guess. I had held off even looking until they came out with the ARM processors, which they have now. And, well, having one with a built in mobile phone would be geeky-cool :)
Also today, I was in his office, and decided to copy-cat
grahame's dual monitor setup.. I have a spare LCD monitor on my desk at work, and a stack of spare 4MB PCI video cards.. so whacked one of those into my work PC and setup dual-head on Windows XP and Linux. Not that bad really. Still need to sort out why XFree86 is only doing 640x480 on both monitors.. where the LCD should be 1024x768 and the CRT should be 1280x960.
Also today.. the bookcase was removed from our server room so we could fit in the rack. We'll be doing that weekend after next.. need to turn off and unplug everything to put it in. It's an impressive rack (a 34C/16C of computer hardware! :P) Someone had to make that joke. Sorry. At this point, I probably shouldn't mention how I ended up with lubricant all over my hands huh? The rack rails for one of our servers are covered in machine oil and I was trying to put them in today.. most annoying. I then impressed the workshop staff by knowing that they would in all likelyhood have some grease remover handcream. They didnt, they used powered stuff, but it worked just as well :) The workshop people also seem happy with me.. I replaced a 15 inch crappy monitor with a 17 inch less crappy monitor after one of them made a remark in passing about it while we were talking about a 19 inch monitor we were shifting. Small things like that can often bring goodwill :)
