So I bought my last MacBook Pro last March, not last April. Which means I can't get AppleCare on it, which means no international warranty. Which some of you might see the problem with. It is however still covered under the mysterious EDU TriCare warranty (hardware warranty in Australia only, no phone support), which means for an Australian purchaser of my secondhand machine, they'll be fine.
As a 2.4ghz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD config, it seems to be worth about AUD$2400 on eBay. Discounts for not having to deal with eBay and the small scratch + 2 zombie pixels on the screen + small dent in speakers means I'd sell it for $2000 and be happy.
Assuming I buy a new 2.93ghz MacBook Pro, with Applecare, the retail EDU cost should be $4695. Which is a lot, but consider I would do it as a final salary sacrifice, so I'd also get about 7% off that, so $4396. Split over 5 pay periods, that would be $879/pay. But it comes out of pre-tax salary, so I actually save another 30% (or so), so $615 per pay, or $3077 all up. Remembering that I'd be making $2000 from the sale of the laptop, it would cost me $1077 to upgrade. If I had just bought Applecare back in March for this one, it would have been $463. So basically it would cost me $614 to upgrade from 2.4ghz and a year old, to 2.93ghz and brand new.
Hmm!
