Here's a good post, which does make me feel a little better about what I see going on in the US:

(from http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0609/S00436.htm )

There should be a lesson here for Bush and the GOP Congress. While you might believe today that you can legalize torture and other crimes against humanity, some day they will come for you. Power does not trump the law forever. You are naked before the world, and it's only a matter of time.

It's true, but god they're shameless about it right now. Nixon at least got Ford to pardon him, while Bush and friends are writing retrospective pardons for themselves.

I am reminded of a friend of my mother. In WA, it is illegal to ride a bike without a helmet, unless you have a medical certificate. This person is a bike rider who doesn't like wearing a helmet, and who is also a MBBS doctor. He has a laminated card in his wallet saying "This is to certify that Dr J Smith is not required to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle. Signed, Dr J Smith". His name isn't Dr J Smith, but you get the point.

I'm mostly worried about what it'll take to get these scary laws revoked. Who will they have to lock up, what will have to be done to them before it makes political sense to change the law back.
