I have a confession. I like some pretty damn horrible and inappropriate music. This will probably not come as a surprise to many of you.
Anyway,
stephiepenguin mentioned that Avril Lavigne had done a cover of Girlfriend in Mandarin Chinese. Which was news to me, since I didn't think she could speak Mandarin. According to Stephie, she can't and even doing it phonetically, she's horrible.
And then I found the french version of Girlfriend. See, now while I can't blame Avril for not being able to accurate re-create a tonal language such as mandarin, I expected better for the french version, since, y'know, she's from Canada, and actually has a french sounding name. I wouldn't have thought that actually being able to sound slightly french wouldn't be too unreasonable to expect. Yeah, not so much. It's grating and horrible. This clip actually has her respond to a question from an interviewer in french.. let me say.. OH GOD THE PAIN.

avril's mandarin isn't that bad -- it helps that since it's a song (a horrible one at that, one i wouldn't even listen to in english) she doesn't have to distinguish among the tones. (are there speaking parts in the song? i couldn't listen to the whole thing.) she actually curls her tongue on some of the sounds, which is a lot better than i've heard from some non-mandarin speakers.
