So at the risk of raising ire by having more and more posts about Apple..

Last night's announcements seem pretty mundane. So here's some rambling comments:

  • iLife 08 and iWork 08 were givens, as was the iMac and mac mini update

  • The new design of the iMac is pretty cute. It also looks like it might be back-opening again, which would be nice

  • Loss of the 17 inch iMac is unfortunate. While the base 20 is now $200 more than it, it was still a handy price point to convince people to get a desktop mac

  • No/small price drop on the Mac mini. Cheapest is still AU$818 EDU

  • Price drops on displays good - now only AU$300-400 more than the Dell equivalent. Apple use S-IPS panels, Dell tends to use TN. S-IPS panels better, but for me, not $1000 better

  • .mac with 10Gb and custom domain support now cheaper than my VPS colo box. Hmm!

  • Gigabit Ethernet on the Airport Extreme Base Station - surprised it wasn't there in the first place

  • Still no macbook mini

  • All the mac wannabe converts are whining that there is still no "missing mac" - yeah, as if Apple will ever ship that

It did seem a bit like "sorry Mac people, everyone was busy with iPhone".

If all you want is web hosting you should check out Dreamhost. I get ridiculous storage (500GB) and bandwidth (5.5TB) for $142/year. That was a special but their rates are normally pretty good.

Plus they're carbon neutral.

Had a chance to play with the iPhone in NY last week. Not that great really.

I have to say I am a recent mac convert. My new employer has nicely purchased me a Mac Pro. Yummy aluminum. Not too slow either.

iPhone is a fine 1.0. I spent four years building smartphones. They made all the classic beginner's mistakes. Hopefully they'll do what Microsoft does and iterate it till they get it right rather than being Apple and marketing it to people till they forget what they wanted in the first place.

Hopefully they'll get a chance to at least fix some of the bigger usability problems with it though. (shiny != usability)

Hmm, I suspect when you are locking yourself into a main monitor size for the life of the computer, 17" just isn't gonna cut it for long enough at the moment...

My 15" CRT has lasted me three desktops and about ten years (admittedly I run it at a higher res than most would), and my primary machine these days is a 12" laptop.

Yes, but you _bought_ it 10 years ago, at which point 15" wasn't too bad.

If you bought a new computer now that locked you into a monitor towards the small end of standard...

I'm sure people could cope, but when the monitor is integral to the machine, you don't want to start too far behind the 8 ball.

10 years ago 15" was towards the small end of standard. Bigger CRTs have been around for a very long time.

Not every user is a pixel junkie, and it's not like 17" was the only option available. I'm with [livejournal.com profile] theducks in bemoaning the resultant low end price hike.
