Dear Optus, Telstra and Vodafone,

I know you all think you're being smart, and coy, by not releasing useful details on iPhone plan or handset pricing, despite the face we're only 6 days out. I'm sure you are all waiting till the other releases theirs. You want to ride the crest of popularity of the device, with not little distractions like people complaining about how much it costs on one network versus the others.

But there's a problem. People buying iPhones, by and large, aren't cretins. Some carriers have made references to this by comments about understanding the iPhone market segment want pay as you go and outright purchases of handsets. We will analyse your plans, far more than you'd like.

Delaying the release of the plans will only delay my purchase of the iPhone, not make me choose something that is more beneficial to you than it is to me.

Regards,
Alex.

We're eight days out.

By law, they're required to reveal pricing plans sevan days before release.

Or even seven days.

Yeah, I read it some time this week, but I can't remember where :-/

Of course you'll buy it anyway. I much doubt the carrier cares if it's this week or next. Analyse as much as you like, they're still going to shaft you.

They're really nice, but going from my pay-as-you-go account, where I spend approximately $15/month, it'll have to be a pretty good deal.

I've been with Telstra for a few too many years now and found that it's the people that aren't already forking money over that get the better deals.

They know you'll pay whatever. If there wasn't that pesky ACCC they'd just get together and fix a price. They might bring the price down after a few months like they did here. Once you've paid the early adopter tax.

Considering that the plans haven't come out yet, I am now of the opinion that they'll be hideous and I'm actually not going to be lining up to buy one next Friday. I will be waiting until I can buy it free from any sort of contract, so I don't have to stop paying my pay-as-you-go (which is currently monthly anyway) account. That and the area to which I am moving is a non-3G supported area - why should I go onto a plan which I can't use anyway?

Sad, but true.

I suspect most people who will buy iPhones as soon as they are released will buy them simply because they are iPhones, regardless of the pricing of the phones and plans. (If I remembered high school economics better I'd probably call this price elasticity or something. But really it boils down to Steve's Reality Distortion Field.)

I can't really imagine the plans being too much better or worse than the current crop of 3G phone plans, though.

Our prices in Canada are pretty steep.
http://www.rogers.com/web/content/wireless-products/iphone_voice_data_packages

Prices start at $60basic + $7access fee + 12% sales tax
= about $75 per month
= $900 per year

This doesn't even include called id.
